New Criminal and Drug Rehab Program Helps a Man Discover his Potentiality
Julio was last arrested at 30 years old. Born and raised in Clovis, New Mexico, he moved to Las Vegas, New Mexico, when he was 18, where he graduated High School and then began college.
His drug use began recreationally, when a friend showed him the high of sniffing inhalants, gold spray paint. A few years later he was addicted and his attitude in life and his actions had completely changed. Once a good student and a top All State soccer player he flunked out of college. He had lost his dreams.
Years later, he was in Texas and lead a police car on a high speed chase. When they finally popped the tires and then captured Julio he managed to slip out of the hand cuffs. He stole a police car at the scene, and almost ran over a cop in his race to leave the scene. The state tried him for “attempt to commit capital murder on PD”, but fortunately the video showed that he swerved to avoid hitting the officer. Given a five year sentence for getting out of restraint from handcuffs, he did 2.5 years and was paroled in 2005. Julio maintained sobriety through his parole sentence but relapsed and moved back to NM. He lost his wife who went back to Dallas with his second son.
He was rearrested and sentenced for possession of aerosol, misdemeanor attempt to use it for a euphoric feeling. He was busted inhaling behind a housing project in a vacant yard.
Once in the system, again, the social worker for the public defenders office referred him to a new criminal and drug rehabilitation program in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Second Chance Program was opened by Rick Pendery, who is the national executive director of the Second Chance Centers, after having a high rate of success running the Second Chance Program in state prisons.
Julio has been taking part in the program for six months, he explains what a difference it has made in his life, “Everything has changed. My self confidence is restored, I have self esteem. I no longer see myself as a loser. I have potential to learn, my hunger to get educated has returned. Education is the one thing that can’t be taken away from a person. I want to go back to school. I believe that the best counselor is one who has been through it. I want to help others. I also want to be a soccer coach. And I like to use words, I might want to do something in the field of English literature.”
The Second Chance Program consists of four core modules, the Drug Rehabilitation Module, the Learning Skills Module, the Self Respect Module all of which are delivered in a secure residential facility, on an intensive eight-hour a day, six-day a week course schedule over an average of six to eight months. The Reintegration Module which includes Life Skills is continued post release to ensure their successful reintegration into the community as a productive citizen.
I feel strongly that this program needs to made available to people.”, Julio explains. “I can’t say enough how I feel that it will save lives. That is what it comes down to: Second Chance has become a front line battle for lives out here, the staff here that are willing to pass on what they are being taught are front line soldiers. The drug war is everywhere. We are battling an unseen enemy that is very prevalent. This enemy needs to be addressed. We can’t cover it up. People can’t wait until it affects them or someone they know.”
Incarcerated Offender is Taught Vital Communication Skills as Part of Rehab
The Second Chance Program in Albuquerque, New Mexico, is a prison-based social rehab program. This program uses a manualized treatment approach rather than a counselor driven treatment criminal rehab program. These manuals are delivered as courses, addressing common insufficiencies found in offenders. Rick Pendery, who opened the center in New Mexico, is the national director of the Second Chance Centers and has piloted the program successfully over the past six years.
“The courses we deliver as part of this criminal and drug rehab program, specifically deal with common deficits found in those with criminal behavior difficulties and substance abuse histories, such as social behavioral skills, life skills, and the development of moral values and restoration of self-esteem.”, Pendery explains. “The address of which has been found to have a positive impact on the development of pro-social behaviors and reduced recidivism. Previous outcome studies on this treatment method have demonstrated equal success for a variety of commonly abused street drugs and alcohol.”
The Second Chance Program includes four modules, handling drug rehabilitation, learning skills, self respect and a reintegration model. One of the beginning steps of the drug rehab module is a communication course that emphasizes the application of the communication tools that are taught, especially confront drills.
A current inmate, Julio, has been in the prison system for over 10 years and had an inhalant addiction. He was referred to the Second Chance program by his social worker for the public defenders office. He is more than half-way through the program now and has hope for a new life when he completes his sentence. He explains, "After completing the communication course, I realize it has been a substantial win in a couple of areas. Obviously, 34 days ago it was very hard to envision completing all of the requirements of the communication booklet. Many days it just seemed easier to quit and go back to County. But then I realized how the very communication drills I was studying were the keys to helping me get through those frustrating urges to quit.”
The drills include confronting a person (sitting comfortably, looking eye to eye) until the student has no negative reaction to looking at another person, sometimes for many hours at a time. The Communication Course module is based on the research of L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of Scientology.
Pendery explains, “Our course in communication skills has many, many drills, including ones covering the areas of handling rebellious people and the ability to accurately determine the level of force necessary to handle a situation. As most of our students have histories of lack of self-control and of relying on force in lieu of communication, these drills address the use of communication and intention in handling life situations rather than confrontation and force. The practical course drills show them how, if in a position where force is necessary, to be able to use force dispassionately and with discipline and self-control, rather than “flying off the handle” or “losing their temper” and only as far as needed to allow communication to occur.”
Julio explains his use, “By applying the Training Routines, I experienced a first-hand example of how the techniques in the training drills help me to stay in control of the outcome of various situation and circumstances that I once allowed to run out of control. My blood test situation, my baby's mama drama and my negative mentality have all been alleviated because of my persistence in learning, drilling, passing and completing this first book. But even more important, is my new gained ability to communicate in a higher quality, not being personally affected by someone’s communication being thrown off, and being able to regain control of the communication, handle the person or situation and bringing the communication back to a level where it is pleasant, effective and stable."
The Two Things That Make the Highly Successful Different to the Average Person
A few years ago some scientists set out to find the best way to predict whether a person will become successful or not. They discovered that there are two areas in which there are big differences between the highly successful and the average, and these two areas make the best predictors of success.
It's interesting that many of the commonly held beliefs as to what constitutes an advantage in the success game turn out to be wrong. For example, most people when asked say that being born into a rich family is a great advantage when it comes to getting wealthy. The research discovered that this in not actually the case.
Similarly age is not an important factor. There are people who become successful at a young age and others who don't become successful until they are much older; in fact some achieve their success very late in life.
The amount of formal education that a person has is not a large influencing factor in a person's overall success in life. Successful people come from all levels of the formal education system and failures are also spread across the board when it comes to official education.
The first of the two strong predictors of success may come as a surprise to many people. It is the size of the person's vocabulary and in particular their ability to draw from smaller of larger vocabularies depending on who they are speaking to.
Although this may initially appear to be a surprising result it probably isn't so surprising once you stop and think about it. A large vocabulary combined with an ability to adjust the vocabulary to the particular listener is probably a sign of good communication skills in general. We live in language based societies and the better we can use our language the more doors of opportunity we can open.
The second strong predictive quality should come as no surprise. It is the amount of reading that a person does in the field of personal development. Successful people are readers and in particular they read books that help them become more fully developed human beings.
It is also interesting to note that the highly successful people tend to read most of these self development books many times. They are not just reading for interest, they are reading to absorb the information and to put it to use in their life. Most of these successful people have favorite self development books that they read each and every year.
So what does all this mean for you and your life?
It probably means that you should ask yourself how well you use your primary language and it probably means that you should also ask yourself how many personal development books you read and how many of those do you read multiple times to help you absorb the learning and make it a part of your day to day life.
You could set a goal to increase your self development reading. You could also set a goal to read each of those self development books 3 or 4 times. It might prove interesting to see just how much your life improves if you do.
